WEICan receives funding to build climate monitoring facility

WEICan, partnered with UPEI's Climate Research Laboratory, has received funding from PEI’s Climate Challenge Fund for a Climate Monitoring Facility. This will allow WEICan to enhance our research capabilities, both with renewable energy, and with regards to climate change.

WEICan will use the facility to:

  • Support research in adjacent renewable energy and meteorological infrastructure
  • Provide infrastructure for long-term climate change observations and intensive experiments with national and international partners
  • Provide insight into the impact of climate change on ice accumulation, major weather events, precipitation, storm surges, sea level rise, and renewable energy power production and how these changes impact stakeholders
  • Research, test, compare, and verify meteorological and environmental measurement systems all co-located in the same facility for calibrations, intercomparisons, and contributions to global monitoring networks. This will aid in determining what type of equipment is needed and where the instrumentation will be best sited for monitoring the impacts of climate change
  • Educate the public through workshops and pamphlets targeted at relevant stakeholders
  • Provide climate forecasting data what will aid renewable energy owners/developers in planning future renewable energy installations and in developing control algorithms for renewable energy generators and batteries that will optimize output of renewable energy generators and reduce greenhouse gas emissions
