WEICan releases RFP for proposed 100 kW solar PV system and 200 kWh battery storage system

The Wind Energy Institute of Canada (WEICan) is a research and development-focused non-profit located on the northern tip of Prince Edward Island. WEICan’s mandate is to advance the development of wind energy across Canada through research, testing, training, collaboration, demonstration, and development since its formation in 1981. WEICan owns and operates a 10 MW wind park and intends to procure a commercial sized, utility connected, photovoltaic solar array and battery energy storage system as part of its Integration and Operation of Renewable Power and Energy Storage project.

WEICan proposes to supplement its existing facilities with a solar PV array and a new battery energy storage system and has released a Request for Proposals (RFP) document. The approximate ratings are 100 kW for the solar PV array and 100 kVA / 200 kWh for the battery energy storage component. This project is supported by a Federal Government grant through the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency. The proposed solar array and battery system will be designed and built to continue previous work and further collaborations that have already begun. This project would also allow research into how wind and solar generation could complement each other and could increase the utilization factor of the storage component. WEICan’s primary goal with this system is to make it available for research purposes including research partnerships with universities, research laboratories and industry in addition to WEICan’s own research activities. When not being used for research demonstrations, WEICan will operate the system with the goal of selling energy to the power grid and minimizing WEICan’s own energy use footprint. Interested parties can obtain a copy of the RFP document by filling in and returning the form linked below.
