Employment Opportunity: Research Engineer

The Wind Energy Institute of Canada is an independent non-profit organization that advances the development of wind energy across Canada through research, testing, innovation, and collaboration.

Job Title: Research Engineer - Renewable Energy

Organization: The Wind Energy Institute of Canada (WEICan)

Location: North Cape, Prince Edward Island, Canada

Employment Type: Full Time, continuing

Salary: $60,000-$110,000 (based on experience and education)

About WEICan:

The Wind Energy Institute of Canada (WEICan) is a non-profit organization founded in 1981, dedicated to advancing wind energy across Canada through research, testing, innovation, and collaboration. Located on Canada's east coast on the northwest tip of Prince Edward Island, our institute benefits from an ideal wind research setting, with 300 degrees of water exposure, typical wind speeds of 8.9 m/s at 80 m, and frequent icing occurrences each year.

WEICan owns and operates an independent renewable energy power plant, which consists of a 10 MW Wind R&D Park. Included in the power plant are 223 kWh of energy storage, 109 kW of bifacial and monofacial PV, meteorological towers, and a small wind test bed, all of which produce more than 8000 data points every second. This infrastructure serves as our research laboratory and allows us to accumulate a wealth of data and nurture a team of experts, enabling us to provide practical opportunities for government agencies, private/public sector businesses, and academic institutions to explore, demonstrate, test, and validate wind energy technologies and concepts in a real-world setting.

Job Description:

WEICan has two major focuses - to maintain operation of our wind turbines, and to research, develop, and demonstrate renewable energy technologies. To support our mission, we seek talented Senior-Level Engineers passionate about joining a purpose-driven organization dedicated to wind energy research. Engineers at WEICan contribute to the development, implementation, and ongoing operation of research, testing and technology development projects. Engineers also support operational performance of WEICan's Wind R&D Park.

Responsibilities will be dependent on the level of position hired.

Principle Responsibilities and Accountabilities:

  • Conduct research, development, and demonstration of renewable energy technologies, with a particular emphasis on wind energy.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to design, implement, and manage wind energy projects.
  • Lead and supervise teams, ensuring effective project coordination and efficient utilization of resources.
  • Apply expertise in wind systems, electrical systems, instrumentation design, and data acquisition systems.
  • Analyze data and employ modeling techniques to evaluate the performance and reliability of wind energy systems.
  • Manage utility-scale energy-related projects, encompassing planning, implementation, and quality assurance.
  • Possess knowledge of vibration analysis techniques and industrial control technologies.
  • Utilize programming skills to support engineering research and optimize wind energy systems.
  • Stay up-to-date with relevant industry standards, including CSA, CEC, and the IEC wind turbine standards.
  • Employ data analysis tools and computer systems, including MS Office and CAD software packages.
  • Demonstrate excellent communication skills, fostering effective collaboration with stakeholders.

Desired Education and Skills:

  • Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline or a related field (Graduate degree is considered an asset).
  • Experience in wind energy systems, electrical engineering, or a relevant energy-related field.
  • Experience in managing teams and coordinating complex projects.
  • Familiarity with electrical/mechanical instrumentation design and implementation.
  • Strong research background with experience in engineering research methodologies.
  • Knowledge of utility-scale energy-related project development and planning.
  • Experience in data analysis, modeling techniques, and vibration analysis.
  • Familiarity with industrial control technologies and their application in wind energy systems.
  • Experience working with utilities is advantageous.
  • Competency in programming and working with instrumentation, digital control systems, and data acquisition systems.
  • Experience in project management methodologies and tools.
  • Familiarity with CSA, CEC, and the IEC wind turbine standards.
  • Experience in computer systems, including MS Office and CAD software packages.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
